And Thanks for All the Fish

I just experienced one of those interesting differences between France and the US.  Or maybe it’s between California and Provence.

We went over to Sara and Christian’s and were pleasantly surprised to see our friend Monique there as well. We caught up on all the news and then came another surprise - Monique had baked one of her famous tarts, a pear one this time.

Sad to say, I couldn't eat it because of the crust, so Christian offered me something else instead.

In the US, your host might offer you some chocolate or a piece of fruit. Or, considering we live in California, maybe a low-carb, high-protein, free-trade, organic artisanal granola bar.

Instead, Christian asked if I would like some fish.  A tin of sardines, to be precise.

Ok then!

Christian knew that I had some gluten-free bread (I’ve started carrying it with me) and he had just gotten some fresh butter from a local farmer.  And bread + butter + sardines is a local favorite.  Especially with a glass of Viognier…

I forgot all about the pear tart.
